A New York City man with ties to Butler County appears on this season of “Face Off,” a special effects makeup competition show.
Joe Drobezko, 31, is one of 12 professional makeup artists competing in this season of the show.
Drobezko said his family moved around a lot when he was growing up because his dad was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. However, he usually spent his summers in Slippery Rock, staying with his grandmother Margaret Drobezko and spending time with friends and other relatives in the area.
The show is elimination style — the contestants get tasked with a new challenge each week and a panel of judges gradually reduces the field until one winner is chosen.
The challenges include preparing makeup for characters that could appear in a variety of different types of movies or television shows, such as horror, science fiction or fantasy.
The show was filmed over about six weeks in Burbank, Calif. The winner gets $100,000 and a car, though Drobezko said he isn't allowed to tell anyone how far he got until it has finished airing.
“It was definitely a unique experience being in front of the camera, the show moves so fast you don't have time to think about it. It was a fantastic experience,” he said.
Drobezko has been doing makeup for several years in New York City and has worked on movies, television shows, music videos and commercials. He had also competed in a couple local competitions in New York, which is how the show's producers heard about him and recruited him for the show.
He said his grandmother and others in the Slippery Rock area are proud of him and are excited to see him on television.
The show, which will have a run of 10 weekly episodes, debuted this week and airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday on the Syfy network.
